On Friday 16th October we held a BME cultural event which we held in celebration of Black History Month at Aburound House in Gillingham.
It was a great day which attracted over 50 people with learning disabilities from North Kent and Medway. The day started with a presentation from the Steppingstone training and employment programme students who talked about the array of different cultures they have learnt about in the programme. This was then followed by a demonstration of Bangra dancing by one of the students. A cultural lunch was served which consisted of a delicious foods and sweets from India. An Indian DJ played cultural music throughout the whole day as well as Henna tattooing and beading. After lunch there was a presentation by an African drumming and dance group who got all of the audience involved in both dancing and teaching drumming. The day was then completed by a performance from an Egyptian dancer.
It was a fantastic day which was vibrant and attracted people with learning disabilities from all backgrounds. We were lucky enough to receive a grant from Medway Council which funded the event.
